Of Being Real And Being True To Ourselves!
Be yourself. Everyone else is already taken. - Oscar Wilde
Too much of our life is spent behind masks, trying to be someone we originally are not.
We all are aware of Shakespeare's famous and priceless idiom - To thine own self, be true. In a society where social media profile rules, it has become all the more difficult to be just ourselves, and to portray our true traits to the world. As if the virtual avatar was not enough, we now have 'filters'! Talk about an illusion covering up another illusion! As it is, the life we live itself is illusionary and fleeting. Add to it, media profiles, DPs, cover photos, filters and what we get is a maze that keeps us searching for our real selves.
Most of us decide to be ourselves when we have lived half of our lives trying to please everybody, trying to fit in and trying to do what the society approves. Very few people succeed at a very young age to embrace their uniqueness and be themselves. The world needs more people who are original and are not scared to be their true selves.
One may find this surprising, but the easiest 'avatar' to be in real life, is our own true self. We are at our best when we are being ourselves. It is extremely difficult to be someone we are not. At the cost of an unpopular opinion, I would like to cite an example. See the atmosphere in an office.. The office is a place where we put up a different front than what we really are, because protocol demands us to be formal and to exhibit 'office-appropriate' behaviour. And yet, how different we are when we are at our homes! Sometimes I feel office will become a much more productive place if only everyone were allowed to be their true selves.
Be yourself. Always. Because there is no one like you. You are unique. You are one of a kind. You will be most comfortable when you are your true self and not pretending to be someone you are not. There is no point in acting like someone else. Any relationship that requires you to be someone other than yourself is doomed. True relationships are those where each and every one can be their amazing selves with complete acceptance and adoration from the other.
Be real. The world has too many of 'fakes'. It is the innate nature of every being to be good and to do good. Circumstances force us to act otherwise. However tough the situation may be, do not let go of your originality. Listen to the voice of your conscience that will whisper to you whenever you stray away from yourself.
I once came across a beautiful line in a book titled Conversations With God written by Neale Donald Walsch which goes something like this - Your highest version is the one which brings you the deepest joy. And such kind of joy can only come by being true to ourselves and by doing good. Take pride in being yourself. May be it will require standing apart from the crowd. Do it anyway! You will be happiest only when you are being yourself.
Be amazingly 'You'. The world will not only adjust, but will embrace you with open arms!
